FAQ
The Ampersand Book Studio is an ampersand, but it is from the time before the term "ampersand" was used. The first recorded ligature (or merging of two letters to make a symbol) of "and" can be found in the ruins of Pompeii. In some graffiti which, given Pompeii's other graffiti, was probably rude and/or funny, the "e" and the "t" of the Latin word for "and," which is "et." You already know "et" from "et cetera."
The long and lovely story of how "et" became the ampersand is recounted by many fans of the symbol. We like Keith Houston's version in his book, summarized a bit here. [link to "Our Logo" subpage under "About" Menu heading.]
